The 2nd TFWC Day at the Capitol began with a breakfast meeting with Pete Laney
former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives as our guest speaker.
Here he is photographed with
Sheila Shea, GFWC Treasurer and the TFWC President.
After
a walking tour of the Capitol led by Nelda Laney, TFWC members stopped at the
Texas WWII Memorial on the Capitol grounds by the Senate Building. In May of
1945, members of TFWC planted a pecan tree as a memorial to the men and women
fighting in WWII.
In
1993 the tree was cut down due to the expansion and renovation of the State
Capitol. TFWC was notified of this and asked if special benches could be made
from the wood. Permission was granted and the benches were made. They are
located in the new expanded area underground. The picture of the architect's
rendering of the bench is in the TFWC Office Manager's office. In September of
1993 under the direction of TFWC President Mary Margaret Roberson, every
district president was encouraged to bring dirt from every county in her
district and on that lovely fall day, a new pecan tree was planted with dirt
from every county in Texas!
On August 15, 2007 a new memorial to Texas veterans of WWII was dedicated. It
is an exact replica of the memorial in Washington DC.
